Steps to Downsizing
It's not as overwhelming as you may think!
Plan Ahead
Determine when and where you'd like to move. What size space will you be moving into and how many belongings can you realistically bring. Develop a timeline to break down the move into manageable steps.
Decluttering
Create four categories: Keep, Sell, Donate, and Discard. Eliminate duplicate items and start small by focusing on the less sentimental areas of your home first. Consider gifting some of your more meaningful or sentimental belongings to close family and friends. Use the 6-month rule: If you haven’t worn your clothing or used an item in the last six months, it might be time to let it go. Digitize your memories by scanning photos and documents to save space. Most importantly, give yourself grace. This is not an easy process!
Ask for Help
Are you unsure about where you'd like to move? If you're considering Senior Living get connected with a local Senior Advisor. They will help narrow down your search based on your care needs and financial situation. They'll also consider your preferences when it comes to community amenities and location. When it's time to start packing, don’t hesitate to lean on family, friends, professional movers, and organizers to help you sort through your belongings. Finally, connect with a Real Estate Agent early on in the process. The agent will determine your home's value, create a timeline for preparing the home to be listed for sale, connect you with the necessary vendors to meet the timeline, and provide quality marketing to get the home sold.
